Weetbix: the breakfast of champions! This breakfast cereal, originally made in New Zealand, has become very popular in many other countries.
It has been around since the 1920s and has been popular in Australia for over 50 years, but it has only recently started to make its way into stores across America.
Weetbix is made from whole-grain oats, rice and wheat. This mixture is baked into biscuits that are crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Originally, these were called ‘health’ biscuits because they were touted as being less fatty than traditional breakfast cereals.
It is normally served with milk or yoghurt for a healthy breakfast option. Whether it’s with milk or water, this cereal can be eaten plain or mixed with other ingredients, like fruit, to make it more filling and nutritious.
The health benefits come from the fibre-rich oats and barley malt extract which provides carbs for energy.
The cereal offers many other health benefits, such as promoting digestive health (from fibre), boosting energy, making you feel fuller for longer, keeping you satisfied and preventing heart disease.
It’s also an excellent source of healthy whole grains, vitamins and minerals to give you a great start to your day and is low in sugar. It contains one of the best sources of B vitamins, including B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), and B9 (folate), and is also high in iron.
This cereal has been around for over 80 years and children in Australia are still eating it in the morning; they enjoy its crunchy texture and sweet taste.
Try it next time for a healthy breakfast or light snack!
