What is dermaplaning?
This is a process in which a dermablade (a blade) is used to gently scrape away the outer layer of dead skin cells to help remove dirt and oils from pores and provides many benefits. It can help to reduce frizzy hair by removing under-the-surface hairs that cause fuzziness.
Dermaplaning, also known as “skin brushing,” is a traditional procedure that is used to exfoliate the skin. The procedure originated in ancient Greece when women would use shells to clean their skin. The process involves the use of a scalpel to remove dead skin cells and peach fuzz from the surface of your face.
The benefits
It stimulates collagen production, removes the build-up of dead skin cells and helps with oil control for those with acne prone skin types. This procedure has many benefits for your skin, including reducing wrinkles and breakouts, improving overall clarity, minimising pores and providing an even skin tone.
This facial procedure offers benefits like smoother and softer skin, the removal of ingrown hairs (which can lead to infections) and exfoliation. The process involves using a scalpel to gently scrape off the top layer of skin cells from the face.
This hair removal technique has been increasing in popularity in the beauty industry. This procedure differs from waxing and shaving because it removes both hair and a thin layer of dead skin, making the skin look clean and fresh.
How it’s done
This procedure can be done at home or in a salon, but it’s typically done by a professional dermatologist or aesthetician. This treatment has been shown to improve many conditions, such as acne and hyperpigmentation while also improving overall appearance. In some cases, doctors may recommend dermaplaning for fine lines and wrinkles.
The procedure can take anywhere from five to 20 minutes, depending on how fast you do it.
If you do it at home, it will cost under $20. You can buy the ‘Revlon Beauty Tool Face Defuzzers’ which contains a 2 pack of dermablades from your local chemist, or you can buy them from your local supermarket or alternatively online (eg. on Amazon) at a lower price. Typically, a dermablade will last anywhere between 1 to 4 weeks max.
So, what steps are involved?
First, wash your skin with warm water and a cleanser.
Second, if you are cleaning your face, apply a toner using cotton pads. Face toners are used to remove excess soap, oils and makeup from the skin. Some ingredients in face toners help with clearing the skin by removing oil, dirt, bacteria and breakouts. It can be used to minimise pores and moisturise dry patches of skin. Many use this product as a second step of their cleansing routine after washing their face with soap.
Third, apply a serum or oil to your skin to ensure the blade slides easily across your skin.
Four, shave off your hair using the blade at a 45 degree angle. This is very important to ensure you don’t cut yourself with the blade. Do not apply pressure when using the blade, simply glide the blade in a downwards direction and in the same direction as the hair grows; gliding the blade against it can cause ingrown hairs and infections to occur.
Five, pat down your face with a fresh towel and wipe away any residual hair. Apply a non-chemical moisturiser (without scent) to ensure your skin does not react to the cream.
Six, clean your blade with alcohol between shaving. You can reuse your blade up to 4 times, after which you will need to use a new one to prevent infections from occurring.
There are some great videos on Youtube demonstrating how it’s done, so I suggest taking a look to become more familiar and confident with the process.
In conclusion
Dermaplaning removes dead skin cells and can help make your complexion look more radiant. Not only does it boost collagen, it also reduces the appearance of cellulite, stretch marks and scars. Furthermore, dermaplaning also helps get rid of blackheads and acne breakouts, which are common on the face.
